Adventuring as a Family: Holidays Full of Thrills and Laughter
Blog Article
Not long ago, a close mate of mine in Auckland asked if I'd organise her family holiday. She wanted something adventurous but still suitable for her two little ones. Challenge accepted. Fast-forward to a week packed with laughs, breathtaking views, and sore muscles (in the best way). Here's how to create your own adventure family vacation.
1. Pick a Destination Where Adventure Comes in Layers
When choosing where to go, versatility is your friend. Mountain areas, for instance, often have hiking for parents, wildlife trails for kids, and adrenaline-packed zip lines for older siblings. You don't have to look far to find destinations with options for every age and fitness level.
2. Adventure Doesn’t Have to Mean Chaos
It’s easy to imagine adventure holidays as go-go-go all the time, but they can still be balanced. For the trip I planned, I alternated high-energy activities (like a rafting tour) with slower options (like a scenic train ride). Remember, everyone needs to catch their breath – especially after a day of thrills.
3. Never Underestimate a Family Challenge
Whether it’s a treasure hunt, a mini mountain climb, or a cooking lesson with a local twist, setting a group challenge is an amazing way to bond. During that trip, the kids were ecstatic when we turned our bushwalk into a scavenger hunt – spotting plants, bugs, and birds became a competition.
4. Be a Little Daring – for Yourself and the Kids
There’s something incredible about seeing a parent take a leap of faith, literally or figuratively. On that trip, my friend (a self-professed homebody) surprised us all by joining the rock climbing session. The kids were in awe. Letting them see you step out of your comfort zone is just as valuable as guiding them through their own.
5. Plan for Mishaps, and Turn Them into Stories
It wouldn’t be a family trip without something going hilariously wrong. On our adventure, we got lost driving to a remote nature park and ended up finding a random picnic area that turned out to be even better. Keep that adventurous spirit alive – even when things don’t go as planned.
Your holiday doesn’t have to be extreme to feel adventurous. Just getting out of your comfort zone as a family is often enough to make the trip special. Report this page
